DIY Tips For Building A New Fence On A Slope

During these crazy times of a global pandemic, many people are opting to remodel or work on projects they weren’t able to finish or even start, instead of just sitting at home. Because of where we live in Utah along the Wasatch Front and Oquirrh Mountain Range, many yards tend to be sloped. For those looking to install a new fence themselves, or work with a fencing company, any fence project can have its challenges. Even though a sloped yard makes the project a little more complex than a flat surface, it is easily doable, especially when you take the proper steps.

Whether you choose to DIY or rely on the professionals, here are a few helpful  tips on how to install a quality sloped fence. We also offer general fence building tips for whatever project you have in mind.

Follow The Contours of Your Yard

The best option when building a sloped fence is to follow the contours of the yard. As you place the fence rails, they will follow a sleek parallel line to the ground, rather than the posts staying level to each other. With this technique, the poles will appear to be at different levels and are most effective when there is a minor slope. Our picket fence with scallop top is a great option for this with their rounded panels that compliment the contours of the fence. If you are using the contour method you may need to custom-cut your fencing to prevent gaps under the panels.

For Steeper Slopes, Use A Stepped Fence

Following the land contours won’t be as simple when you have a steeper slope. In this situation, you will want to consider a stepped fence. A stepped fence is built with separate panels where each section is higher than the previous. The final product looks similar to a staircase but in a fence form. With a stepped fence, you can use pre-cut panels since they do not need to match the contouring of your property.  Although, to get the proper height for each section, you will want to cut posts individually.

Fill In Any Gaps

Depending on how your slope is contoured, a stepped fence will leave gaps under each panel section. You’ll need to fill in these gaps if you are worried about animals getting in or out of your yard. Many homeowners opt to grow vegetables or plants in the ground or hang planters along the fence to fill in space. If you need help at any point, our fencing pros are happy to offer suggestions for your next fence project.
